What ACP Is

The Adaptive Capacity Profile (ACP) is an educational and developmental framework that measures how you function under pressure, stress, uncertainty, change, responsibility, and disruption.

ACP is based on nine operational dimensions that together reveal your patterns of adaptation. It produces scores that help you understand your current adaptive function within a specific context - what we call a "load window."

Unlike personality tests that categorize who you are, ACP maps how you function under real conditions. This distinction matters because adaptive patterns can change and develop over time.

Understanding Load Windows

A "load window" is a specific period or situation where you experienced significant pressure. ACP asks you to focus on one such window because adaptive patterns emerge most clearly under real conditions.

Different types of load (sudden vs. ongoing, social vs. task-based, internal vs. external) may produce different patterns. That's why ACP allows you to create multiple assessments for different load windows.

Your results are always interpreted in context: "This is how you adapted under this type of pressure" - not "This is who you are."

The Nine Dimensions

Each dimension below mirrors what you can open from your results. Explanations, the mechanisms people often use to strengthen them, and reflective prompts all come from the same framework — so results flow naturally into learning.

Handling Complexity

Staying Regulated

Pacing, coherence, and load modulation under pressure.

How well you could pace yourself, modulate intensity, and stay internally coherent rather than fragmented while pressure was real.

What often strengthens this

  • Alternate focused effort and rest on purpose, rather than pushing nonstop.
  • Keep one or two daily anchors steady (sleep, meals, a check-in).
  • Give hard feelings somewhere to go, like a short walk or writing them down.
  • Mark the end of intense stretches with a small reset ritual.

  • 2.What tended to tip you from steady into scattered?
  • 3.Where did rest actually happen, and where did it get skipped?

Updating Under Feedback
Internal: identity rigidity

How readily you could examine, revise, or update your position under valid feedback during this load window.

What often strengthens this

  • Deliberately seek out information that might prove you wrong.
  • Remind yourself that changing a view is not the same as losing yourself.
  • Pause between getting feedback and responding to it.
  • Decide in advance what evidence would change your mind.

Identity Stability
Internal: stability

Load-bearing anchors that keep your sense of self intact under pressure.

Whether you kept a stable sense of who you are and what matters to you — an internal anchor — while the situation pulled at you.

  • Write down two or three core values and let them guide decisions this week.
  • Spend time with people who reflect you back to yourself.
  • Revisit one commitment that holds steady regardless of circumstances.
  • Use a short grounding practice to re-center when things pull at you.

Taking In New Information
Internal: permeability

Intake of novelty, contradiction, and feedback.

How open you were to new information, different approaches, and unexpected possibilities — your willingness to let input in.

  • Ask one person for a perspective that differs from yours.
  • Treat surprise as useful information instead of a threat.
  • Take in new input in smaller amounts so you can actually absorb it.
  • Get curious about the unfamiliar before judging it.

  • 2.Did you take in more than you could organize?
  • 3.When did openness help, and when did it overwhelm?
  • 4.What made it easier to consider an unfamiliar approach?
Processing Without Fragmenting
Internal: containment

Metabolization of difficult input without fragmenting.

Whether you could process difficult information or strong emotions without falling apart — holding intensity long enough to work with it.

What often strengthens this

  • Use a grounding technique (breath, feet on the floor) when intensity rises.
  • Work through hard material in smaller pieces rather than all at once.
  • Name what is happening out loud or on paper as it happens.
  • Lean on one person who helps hold what feels too big alone.

  • Build a second source of support so you are not relying on one person.
  • Tell one person specifically what would help this week.
  • Set up a routine or tool that carries a recurring task for you.
  • Schedule regular check-ins instead of waiting for a crisis.

  • 1.Who or what actually showed up during this load window?
  • 2.Was support available when you needed it most, or only in theory?
  • 3.Where were the gaps in your support structure?
  • 4.What kept you from drawing on support that existed?

Ability to begin correction after disruption.

How quickly you could recognize when something went wrong and begin correcting course — the start of repair.

  • Notice setbacks earlier, with less self-judgment.
  • Take one small corrective action instead of waiting for a perfect one.
  • Separate spotting a problem from solving it instantly.
  • Make it cheaper to admit something is off, so you act sooner.

  • Build structure that makes the improvement the easy option.
  • Note what made a repair stick versus slip, and reuse it.

Interaction Patterns & Common Friction Points

Adaptive patterns tend to experience more or less friction depending on the environment around them. These are observations about conditions—not judgments, compatibility scores, or predictions. The same pattern can thrive in one setting and strain in another.

How quickly and effectively you update, repair, and adapt. Combines Permeability, flexibility in updating, and repair capacity.

Scaffold Density

How much real support is available during pressure. Based directly on your Scaffold Structure score.

General Adaptive Function

Overall adaptive function under the selected load window. Synthesized from all three higher-order factors.

Trajectory Types

After scoring, ACP assigns a likely trajectory pattern. Remember: trajectory is not destiny. It describes a pattern inside the selected load window.

Stable Maintenance

Sustained coherence without significant gain or loss.

Ascending Integration

Load converted into higher-order structure.

Phase Transition

Anchor restructuring into a new configuration.

Oscillatory

Cyclical coherence/disruption pattern.

Degrading

Documented slope deterioration over time.

Collapse
